Travel Japan Using The Japan Train and Bus System (MunchTrip Travel Tips)

March 14, 2019
How traveling around using Japan train and bus system changed my attitude.
We went around Japan and visited some of the bigger cities. We went around using buses and trains to get to one point after another (namely the JR Train, Tokyo Metro, JR West, JR Central, JR East Shinkansen Bullet Trains). It was amazing!

Based on our experience, it was safe, efficient, and clean. Seeing this also made me want to be efficient and respectful towards others.
Was it easy to use the bus and train system in Japan? Definitely!

However, it also depends on how observant you can be. There were times when the characters of destinations were in Kanji (what characters in the Japanese writing system are called). But, if you are observant enough you should be able to distinguish and match the characters if needed. There were times when the English names would be written as well so be patient.
There are some spots we wanted to go to Japan that were not as accessible by train, but Japan buses were readily available to get to these spots, too.
Japan is a very thoughtful and efficient country to visit. I wished more people with the desire to make it convenient for others existed in the world.

How To Travel Better: Roll Your Clothes Time-Tested Travel Hack

August 14, 2018
travel tip: roll.
Welcome to MunchTrip's Favourite Travel Better Series. This is one of my most favorite ways to travel better. People call it a travel hack and it is! I have been doing this in my travels for more than 10 years. I thought sharing the advantages with you would be a good idea.

I find this is to be one of the most useful in making my travel better.  It leaves me more time to enjoy my destinations and it saves me luggage check-in expenses.

I'm not claiming this to be my idea. I came across the idea of rolling my clothes when packing back in the early 2000s. I was a fan of Discovery Channel and although I am not sure if I got the idea there, I know it was from one of those types of shows. The idea was then improved later on with the birth of many "travel hacks" shared on YouTube vloggers and Facebook life hack videos.

Here are the advantages:
  • Rolling clothes leave less wrinkles on my shirts than folding them and placing them in my bag.
  • Rolling clothes maximises your bag space whether it be a suitcase or a back pack.
  • It is easier to pull clothes out of the bag without disarranging everything in your bag.
Ever since I could remember, I have been rolling my clothes since the late 90s and I have never looked back since.

Another plus for this method is something I got from my partner.

Rolling of clothes allows me to just pick up any shirt of a certain colour, and because I only see the shirt partially, I cannot judge it by what brand it was or what print it had on it.

Saves me time changing clothes and makes me enjoy our destinations more.

Oh! Oh! Oh!  It also reminds me of my favourite Filipino foods, LUMPIA...

FRESH LUMPIA?

or the NGOHIONG!

NGOHIONG?

Mactan International Airport Food In The Boarding Area

August 03, 2018

I just recently traveled from the Cebu Mactan International Airport going on a domestic flight to Cagayan de Oro. I realized something. No matter how we tell ourselves to leave early so we could dine somewhere before going to the airport, we still fail at doing so about 50% of the time.  Airport food would then be our only option.

The problem then arises of not knowing what food stalls are in the Cebu airport since I noticed merchants change often in airports.  Airport food is more essential than we think and is crucial for our travels. We wouldn't like to get sick during a vacation or even after a vacation, when we go back to work. You don't want to blow your budget either in sometimes, so a lot of smart budgeting goes a long way.

Now we ask:
What shall I eat in the Cebu airport? What food is available in the Cebu airport? Does Cebu airport have food stalls I would like to buy food from?

Therefore, in order for me to remember and some of you out there to know, these are the merchants in the Mactan International Airport Domestic flights boarding area for a first in my series of AIRPORT FOOD.

Top N Dog beside Grilled Pita (Cebu Airport food: sandwiches)

Tsim Sha Tsui Dimsum & Tea Bar (Cebu Airport food: HK/Chinese cuisine)

Zubuchon (Cebu Airport food: rice meals with roasted pig cooked in different ways)

Dunkin Donuts (Cebu Airport food: doughnuts and sandwiches)

Potato Corner (Cebu Airport food: fries)

Jollibee (Cebu Airport food: Filipino fast food)

Bo's Coffee (Cebu Airport food: caffeine and cafe food)

Tubo (Cebu Airport food: cane juice)

Cinnabon (Cebu Airport food: pastries)

Fraiche Deli (Cebu Airport food: sandwiches and smoothies)

Filipino Ways On How To Do A Beach Trip On A Budget Plus Travel Tips

April 17, 2018
Beach trips on a budget the Filipino way with 3 travel tips
For someone who loves to go to the beach on a regular basis (and thank God for being programmed as such in a tropical country), doing beach trips on a budget has become easier.  My family have been doing cheap beach getaways at least three times a year since we were little.  So, these travel tips we will be sharing, are based on our experiences.

We are glad to be sharing them to you, but we can't say these Filipino traditions or Filipino ways of doing beach picnics, and travel tips work for everyone. That is just a little disclaimer. :)

If they do work for you on your budget beach trips and budget vacations on the beach, it would be wonderful if you tag #munchtrip in your social media posts. We would be glad to see you find our tips helpful.

Without further adieu, here are MunchTrip's travel tips on how to do a beach trip on a budget and to go on cheap beach getaways.

TRAVEL TIP #1: BE FLEXIBLE WITH TRANSPORTATION
Riding on Philippine buses can be cheap,
but for bigger groups renting a van might be more economical.
Buses can be cheap for a group of four. But sometimes, if your group is already bigger (six and above), hiring a private van, or even a jeepney could be more economical.
I remember back when we were younger, hiring a jeepney for the barkada* is the Filipino way to go.

TRAVEL TIP #2: DRY OVER SAUCY. SOY SAUCE OVER TOMATO.
We love Filipino food cooked at home. We crave and favor our grandma's adobo, mama's pancit, and papa's kinilaw. So to have a beach trip on a budget, we tend to do potlucks.

"Dry over saucy" basically means pick dry or fried food over ones that have sauce. This, we got from a Quality Assurance for Food expert. Sauces can spoil faster because of the liquid content.

Filipino food is the best.
But for trips, remember
DRY over SOY SAUCE over TOMATO SAUCE.

"Soy sauce over tomato."  If you must have sauces, avoid tomato-based and dairy-based sauces as well. The acid content might make your tummy react badly. When we travel, our stomach can produce more acid than normal.

TRAVEL TIP #3: BRING UTENSILS. DON'T BUY.
Although it may be easier to throw away disposable cups and utensils, it is cheaper to bring reusable ones that you may have already lying in your cabinet.  You could easily spend 150PHP (3 USD) which you could have spent to buy over a kilo of chicken pieces, and cornstarch to make Baked or Fried Chicken (like the one I made for the photo above).

Besides, mama's Tupperware can take a break from staying in the cupboard for four months since Christmas.

and here below are some options to answer your questions on "where to stay in Medina Misamis Oriental".

Below are short article reviews of accommodations available in Medina.

Resort de Alberto Hotel mini-review
I stayed at this hotel for three nights earlier this year.  My purpose was to visit Medina, Misamis Oriental.

This place is good if you want to stay close to the Municipal Hall of Medina, but also just one motorsikad away from the Duca White Beach, and Medina's Alibuag Cold Spring.

Rates are slightly above average compared to other options at 2000-3000 Php (40-60 USD).  They serve free plated "silog" breakfast to their hotel guests.

Travel Tips While staying in Resort de Alberto
During my previous visit, their WIFI internet worked fine for two out of three days that I stayed there. So, if you need to be connected all the time to internet, have a back up.

Duka Bay Resort mini-review
I stayed at this resort for two nights earlier this year.

My purpose was to go on vacation with my family.  I loved waking up in front of the beach and being a few minutes from where I can swim.

Rates are above average compared to other options at 2500-5000 Php (50-100 USD).  They, too, serve plated "silog" breakfast to their hotel guests.

Travel Tips While staying in Duka Bay Resort
Go out of the room and get your money's worth.  Swim!
Their free wifi was good near the restaurant.  However, the rooms or villas are far so bring your own if you really need to stay connected.

Travel and Booking Hotel Rooms Made Easy For Travel Planners Thru Traveloka

February 04, 2017
I have done quite a bit of travelling and I always have extra copies printed, screenshot, and placed in a separate folder in my USB and Google Drive just to be sure.  I was quite pleased to have found an app that makes it easier.

Plus, a short review on the Mallberry Suites at the bottom of this article. ;)

It was a Saturday when my friends made a sudden decision to have an overnight stay where we all can be together.  They assigned me the task of booking hotel rooms in Cagayan de Oro because they trusted me as the "travel blogger" of the group.

Everybody knows that sleepovers with friends are sleepless nights together of course, so I knew I needed 24 hour food establishments nearby.  Almost immediately, I had a few hotels in Cagayan de Oro as options in mind. :D

I got on my phone and browsed on my App Traveloka for frequent discounted rooms in Cagayan de Oro.

Traveloka App Review

Traveloka is a very impressive phone app that I used in booking hotel rooms because I am a type of travel planner who wants to do everything efficiently.

I was able to book two rooms in Malberry Suites Business Hotel among hotels in Cagayan de Oro with ease and less time needed to search for my booking details afterwards.

A Tedious Travel Planner Like Myself Will Love This App
If there was a type of traveller I could categorize myself in, I would say, I am a “perfectionist traveller”.  I want everything ready in my travels.  Booking hotel rooms should be planned, done, printed, and photographed on my phone.

I was very impressed by how efficient the app was to make sure it kept three records of the booking immediately after confirmation in the following:
-   an easy-to-access “My Booking” button on the bottom.
  • an email with the confirmation code
  • a text sent to your contact number provided

I was a happy travel planner who didn’t need to take extra steps to keeping details of the booking because they were sent to me right away automatically.

Travelling Light And Safe By Only Using Your Traveloka Phone App
I also rely heavily on apps on my phone because it is easier to whip out the device in public compared to a tablet or a laptop.  I could look for a hotel on my phone while in a cafe sipping on some coffee, or even when I am in an airport waiting for my flight is so much more convenient.

I needed two rooms for 4 persons so to show you how I used the app, here were the steps on which I was able to book the hotel.

How To Use The Traveloka Phone App
Here is the simple menu of the Traveloka App.

All I had to do was click on the “Hotels” button.

From here, I entered the details needed — Destination, Check-in Date, Duration, Number of Guests, and Number of Rooms —  and clicked “Search”.

Scrolling down from the list of details then give me hotels in Cagayan de Oro to choose from.  I zeroed in on Malberry Suites Business Hotel.  So I clicked on the name of the hotel.

The app brought me to a page where I could see the Main Facilities offered by the hotel while the price value of the room is shown below.  I clicked on the orange button, which seemed to conveniently be the uniform color of the buttons in this app.

Browsing thru the app is made easier with the easy to understand features offered by the hotel like the Free Breakfast and Free Wifi feature which turn green when available.  Choices of the types of rooms are also easy to view by scrolling down from this point.  I then click on the orange button of the corresponding room I want to get.

From here, there are four steps I have to go thru to confirm and pay for my booking.  I simply click “I’m booking for myself” and enter “any special requests” if I preferred a non-smoking room, a room by the window, a room with 3 pillows, or any other particular needs I want to request for.

I now was brought to the page where I could review the details and double check the booking details.  Scrolling down would bring me to the “Continue to Payment” button.

This part is impressive in my opinion as it gives me many options to pay for the booking.  Nowadays, when 711 convenient stores are starting to be more common near hotels in Cagayan de Oro, the Over-the-counter option was the most attractive option.

I receive a voucher which i needed to pay for the booking..

 ...and voila!
I get an SMS, an email, and the booking is available to be viewed in the app itself.

Booking hotel rooms couldn’t be more convenient.

You Never Go Hungry Staying At Malberry Suites

When we went to the hotel to check in, I felt safe knowing that security was visible yet courteous when I entered the building.
Front Desk greeted me with a smile when I checked in and answered my every question about available facilities.
I was disappointed to know that the swimming pool (a feature marked as available in the Traveloka description) was only available if we added payment.

But this hotel did not fail me on my need to have 24 hour food establishments nearby.  There was a 711, a Yellow Cab pizza place, and McDonald's within walking distance.  Thank God!

Conclusion

The one-night stay at Mallberry Suites using the hotel booking app Traveloka was a success.

I recommend it to all who want to see discounted rates with season promos.  It also has promos for when there are holidays.

My favourite part about it has to the very thoughtful feature of immediately giving you copies of the booking on your phone, email, and the app itself.

Plus, it also helps book flights.  Genius Traveloka!

If you want to discover Cagayan de Oro, check out my other posts as well.

That's it.

On to my next munchtrip.

Catch ya later, fellow munchters!
