Locals' Love Their Ngohiong And I Understand Why It Is A Must Eat In Cebu

July 26, 2018
Simply a Cebu local favorite.
Where the people go, is where affordable good food is.

Who doesn't like a good ngohiong? Why does this often get in the list of must-eats in Cebu?

Five spiced juliened jicama (a.k.a. turnip, rutabaga, or swede) rolled in a lumpia wrapper then dipped in spiced cornstarch before deep fried. YES!

Also get Cebu local longganisa, chorizo, stuffed egg, stuffed crab, local "ginabot", gizzard and liver.

Most of the food items were less than 20 PH pesos ($ 0.50) each. ;)

Dip them all in the spicy sauce and pair with pusô.

Simple. Filling (the best excuse because it is full of fiber). Affordable.

Ngohiong is 😍

Bevato Egg Rolls Come Rolling In From Kenko Naicha

October 06, 2016

BEVATO Egg Rolls come in many flavours and Black Sesame is my fave!
Kenko Naicha now has food to munch on, did you not know?

To pair with Kenko Naicha’s drinks, they now have with pastas, meals, and egg rolls as well.

I came across Black Sesame Egg Rolls.  I took one roll.  I had a bite and a few pieces crumbled at the sides of my lips.  I stick out my tongue to save it from falling because it was a flavourful hallow sweet thing.

More delicate, less crunchy, these egg rolls should not be mistaken with the barquillos from the clear packs of pasalubong shops.  These egg rolls do not have polvoron either or peanut brittle in it.  This is not turrones de mani, which is also known as “Cacahuate”.

I chew some more.  The more the pieces broke apart in my mouth the more of the flavour bursted.  It delighted me and made me think “I’m glad I got that over the other flavours, because I liked it more than any other.”

The matcha-flavoured was promising but I find myself liking really strong almost grassy-like matcha like on Japanese Matcha Kitkats, so this one did not get me as mush as the black sesame did.

If not familiar with sesame (which i doubt), the nutty smell of sesame that is somewhat close to peanuts, and almonds are what greets you first.  As I munch on these brittle cigar-sized sweets the taste, reminded me of sweet black sesame Korean bread I once tasted in Missy Bon Bon.

If you want something sweet, nutty, and comforting.  A pack of BEVATO Egg Rolls are sold at Kenko Naicha and other partner "tinabu-an" shops in Cagayan de Oro.

They can be a nice appetiser, snack, or dessert.  However you want it.

Imagine this delicate delicacies on top of your ice cream?  I can.

As for their food selection, I have tried three and liked the Tomato Herb Chicken Pasta, priced at 199 PH pesos, most as it had the bit of sourness I love in Italian style pasta.

So if you come across any of the Kenko branches in:

- Big R Robinsons 2nd floor, Limketkai Center, Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro- Centrio Mall 3rd floor near cinemas, Corrales St, Cagayan de Oro- Limketkai Mall 2nd floor near cinemas 1 & 2, Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro- Major P.N. Roa Street, Carmen, Cagayan de Oro Cityand- Laguindingan Airport Boarding Area 2nd floor, Laguindingan- Bellfranz Building, Ubaldo street, Iligan

make sure to check out their food choices as well as their tea selection.

That's it.

Catch you on my next munchtrip.

Bye Bye my fellow munchters.

Why The Heck Dried Philippine Mangoes When We Can Have Them Fresh

September 24, 2016
And dip in chocolate?

It's a weird fruit fiesta fiasco for someone or a wild wallpaper of a person with a sweet tooth and love for mangoes.

Dried mangoes is almost a default "tinabuan"* when visiting a destination in the Philippines, especially Cebu, because it is simply the National Fruit of the Philippines.

Nowadays, they are also available dipped in chocolate and as chewies.

Why Dried Mangoes From The Philippines?
Some may ask.  It is because the variety of mangoes mostly grown in the Philippines are carabao mangoes.  They are known around the world for its sweet and exotic taste at its ripest.

If you have tried it, you'll understand.

Unfortunately, if you wanted to bring some outside of the Philippines it isn't easy as you need authorisation papers from the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI), this according to https://www.philippine-embassy.org.sg/the-philippines-2/visit-the-philippines/customs-passenger-guidelines/.

Having them dried, pasteurized and packaged safely would be the easiest to transport then.  So, dried mangoes it is!

There is a Mango Flying Everywhere
Because our carabao mango is well-loved by a lot of people, not just Filipinos, there is a demand to try this product.  In fact, there are a lot of dried mangoes processed and packed by Profood International Corp for other countries such like Korea and Japan.

Go to the nearest department store and look for the Philippine section, there will be dried mangoes there and most probably they are packed from our 1st stop on our second day of the Cebu Food Crawl 2016 - Profood.

That's it you guys.

Catch you on my next munchtrip.

Bye Bye my fellow munchters.

How To Court Someone With Philippine Mango aka Carabao Mango

September 23, 2016
Carabao/Philippine Mangos harvested in Cebu at Profood International Corp
People do crazy things for love.  People do crazy things because they love the Philippine mango too.

Why Sweet Mangoes are Enjoyed in The Philippines
The mango is the National Fruit of the Philippines.  But it is not only us, Filipinos, who love this  diverse fruit.

Philippine mango also known as "carabao mango" (Carabao mango by Wikipedia) and this among exotic fruits is known around the world for its exotic sweetness that contributed to a big craving for these.

How Are Sweet Mangoes Enjoyed
The best way to experience the Philippine mango is eating it fresh and sweet when ripe.

All needed are the experienced skills to know the firmness is just right (not too mushy) and the aromatic smell is beckoning you to eat it.  The looks of the mango skin alone do not tell the ripeness.

1. With the mango skin still on, slice into three parts.  The middle being the pit.

2. The cheeks (inner part or meat) of the mango is then scored diagonally.

3. Scored another time across to intersect with previous lines.  You should be seeing multiple hashtags (#) now.

4. Then pushed up to reveal diamonds of pulp sweetness.

Another favourite preferences of enjoying sweet mangos are in Mango Float (a chilled Filipino food eaten as dessert made up of mango slices layered between graham crackers, cold cream and condensed milk).

How To Court Someone With The Philippine Mango
I remember my Philippine History teacher in high school once said, the mango is shaped like a human heart, so it symbolises love.

"Ows?"

If you like a person and you want to tell that person that he or she is sweet, give sweet mangoes.  It will surely give her a smile.

But if you want to profess your whirlwind-like romance for someone, especially a Filipina, don't give her chocolate and flowers.  Instead give her mangos.  Find the face-wrenching sour green mango and add uyap**.

If you are lucky to be in the Philippines, it is only 20 PH Pesos (less than 0.50 USD)

You may say "WHUT?" to this combination but it is so good.

It is a rollercoaster of umami, tangy, and sweet that will make her jump off her feet and into your arms.

Try it.  Good luck!

That's it.

Catch you on my next MunchTrip.

Bye bye my fellow munchters.
