Philippine Beaches: Dahican Beach, Mati, Davao Is A Wild Pacific Mati Beach

May 02, 2018
Swim At Your Own Risk on this Wild Pacific Mati Beach, Philippine Beaches - taken in Dahican Beach, Mati, Davao
This Mati Philippine beach, which faces the Pacific Ocean, will challenge swimmers.

Dahican Beach, Mati, Davao is Pacific Ocean beach surprise gem among many Philippine beaches we have been to.

We were not expecting a beach like this existed. It had shallow reefy areas great for experiencing calmer waters.  We featured that on a blog post here

However, on this MunchTrip.blogspot.com post will be a video of the wild side of Dahican Beach Mati. You will see the deep areas have waves with heights over a meter on the other side of the beach.

Highs and lows.

There is so much on this beach that caters to different types of Thalassophile* (whoa, new and big word for us).

Without further ado, here is one more for the best beaches in the Philippines some of you may have never been to.

HOW TO GET TO DAHICAN BEACH, MATI, DAVAO
I know of only one way to get to Dahican Beach, Mati, Davao.
  • by land:
    • 2+ from Tagum City to Mati
    • 3+ from Davao City to Mati
    • 8+ hours from Cagayan de Oro to Mati via Malaybalay City and Tagum City
    • 10+ hours from Cagayan de Oro to Mati via Valencia and Davao City
Technically, there is Mati Airport (MXI), but as of the time I'm writing this, it only caters to small privately owned planes. Going to Mati by ferry or ship is still not possible, but the closest port is SASA Pier of Davao City. If you discover other ways of getting to Mati, tell do share on the comments section below.

Travel tip: When in Dahican, Mati, Davao

There are motorcabs in neighboring municipalities of Dahican, Mati.  We only saw one or two in the area.

They are not the same as Cagayan de Oro's motorela although closer to Medina's motorsikad.

I did not notice any taxis and jeepneys around Dahican, Mati.  However, we have been told that habal-habal can be hired.  These are motorbikes that take passengers.  we have not gone on one in Dahican though.

Therefore, we would recommend that you bring a car or hire a van when in Dahican, Mati.

Swim at your own risk. Waves can get to 2 meters in height.

Sunbathe.

Skim.

Surf.

SEAFOOD.

Sleep.

Simple. ;)

Filipino Ways On How To Do A Beach Trip On A Budget Plus Travel Tips

April 17, 2018
Beach trips on a budget the Filipino way with 3 travel tips
For someone who loves to go to the beach on a regular basis (and thank God for being programmed as such in a tropical country), doing beach trips on a budget has become easier.  My family have been doing cheap beach getaways at least three times a year since we were little.  So, these travel tips we will be sharing, are based on our experiences.

We are glad to be sharing them to you, but we can't say these Filipino traditions or Filipino ways of doing beach picnics, and travel tips work for everyone. That is just a little disclaimer. :)

If they do work for you on your budget beach trips and budget vacations on the beach, it would be wonderful if you tag #munchtrip in your social media posts. We would be glad to see you find our tips helpful.

Without further adieu, here are MunchTrip's travel tips on how to do a beach trip on a budget and to go on cheap beach getaways.

TRAVEL TIP #1: BE FLEXIBLE WITH TRANSPORTATION
Riding on Philippine buses can be cheap,
but for bigger groups renting a van might be more economical.
Buses can be cheap for a group of four. But sometimes, if your group is already bigger (six and above), hiring a private van, or even a jeepney could be more economical.
I remember back when we were younger, hiring a jeepney for the barkada* is the Filipino way to go.

TRAVEL TIP #2: DRY OVER SAUCY. SOY SAUCE OVER TOMATO.
We love Filipino food cooked at home. We crave and favor our grandma's adobo, mama's pancit, and papa's kinilaw. So to have a beach trip on a budget, we tend to do potlucks.

"Dry over saucy" basically means pick dry or fried food over ones that have sauce. This, we got from a Quality Assurance for Food expert. Sauces can spoil faster because of the liquid content.

Filipino food is the best.
But for trips, remember
DRY over SOY SAUCE over TOMATO SAUCE.

"Soy sauce over tomato."  If you must have sauces, avoid tomato-based and dairy-based sauces as well. The acid content might make your tummy react badly. When we travel, our stomach can produce more acid than normal.

TRAVEL TIP #3: BRING UTENSILS. DON'T BUY.
Although it may be easier to throw away disposable cups and utensils, it is cheaper to bring reusable ones that you may have already lying in your cabinet.  You could easily spend 150PHP (3 USD) which you could have spent to buy over a kilo of chicken pieces, and cornstarch to make Baked or Fried Chicken (like the one I made for the photo above).

Besides, mama's Tupperware can take a break from staying in the cupboard for four months since Christmas.

Secrets to Getting to One of the Best Philippine Beaches In Medina Misamis Oriental

April 05, 2018

Best Philippine Beaches - Medina Misamis Oriental
Best Beaches in the Philippines - Medina Misamis Oriental - MunchTrip

Medina, Misamis Oriental is no Boracay island, but it has a white beach that cures my Vitamin sea deficiency.  This beach is in Duca, where Philippine beach resorts like Duka Bay Resort, DU Dy, and Capistrano Beach are known mostly only to locals.  Duca beach (a.k.a. Duca White Beach) is one of the best beaches in the Philippines, and yet some of you have probably never been there.

HOW TO GET TO MEDINA, MISAMIS ORIENTAL
I know of three ways to get to Medina, Misamis Oriental:
  • via Cagayan de Oro City Misamis Oriental by bus
  • via Camiguin by barge and bus
  • via Butuan by bus

I am most familiar with the route via Cagayan de Oro City, which is 2-3 hours away by bus.

Choose the "Portulin" Medina bus stop near Duka Bay resort.  This is the quickest way to go to the beach area. Most bus conductors know this bus stop, too.  But, if you happen to accidentally find yourself at the other bus stop, Fiesta Brand in Cabug, do not panic.  Take the next tip below.

Travel tip: When in Medina, Misamis Oriental
Medina Misamis Oriental mode of transportation
When in Medina, travel by "motorsikad".

Recommended way to travel around Medina is by motorsikad, Medina's main means of public transportation.

It not the same as Cagayan de Oro's motorela.  The seating arrangement is also different, but it is just as interesting in structure.

Motorsikad fare per passenger varies from 7 to 10 Php pesos  (0.20-0.25 USD), so get your change ready.

If you happened to ride a "sikad", a bike with sidecar or motorsikad without a motor, the fare varies on your conscience.  Ha ha!  But seriously, it varies from 5 to 10 pesos per passenger.  It is best to ask the engine (a.k.a the driver with human power) before going on the ride.

There are no taxis and jeepneys around Medina.

Motorsikads, and sikads rarely operate after 9PM.  So enjoy the silence and the fresh air.

Duca white beach is on my list for the best beaches in the Philippines.  The local beach resorts here with at least basic amenities are Duka Bay resort, Capistrano resort, and D.U. Dy resort.

It is no Boracay beach, so do not expect commercial food chains 10 meters from the shore of this beautiful Philippine beach.

Medina's Alibuag Cold Spring, is a wonderfully unique swimming attraction as well.  A cemented rock pool surrounding a natural freshwater cold spring.  The water is clear and very cold.  You might want to see it to believe it.

Then, a special event that is worth mentioning is “Hinuklog.”  It is a Medina re-enactment street play based on "Pasyon Ni Kristo" (translation Passion of Christ).  It happens during the Holy days of the Holy Week.  It is a yearly tradition in Medina, Misamis Oriental that continues to gain popularity among Christian and non-Christian tourists.

Relax In The Philippines at Shangri-La's Mactan Resort and Spa in Cebu

October 14, 2016
Shangri-la Resort and Spa Hotel in Cebu is a beautiful escape from the mundane.  This is based on my extraordinary experience. If you were spending your summer in the Philippines, this luxury spot might just be what you were looking for after visiting some of the best Philippine beaches.

It was day two in the Cebu Food Crawl 2016.  We had a tour at Profoods Corp and a short stop at Cafe Jasmin for a Cafe White.  I had a milky caffeinated cup because I didn’t sleep the night before.  I probably should’ve gotten something else with less milk.
